An unreliable vehicle in general is not necessarily an unreliable vehicle in particular. If you know your vehicle, you know its limits and you know how not to exceed them. If you have an obsessive-compulsive personality and you pride yourself in paying attention to important details that other people miss, you are not likely to have any kind of car trouble that you can't handle. Besides, Fuhrman had at least two vehicles he could drive.
Fuhrman might have saved the Scout for special occasions. Then again he might have driven the hell of it. I'd like to know what he drove to work every day. It would be interesting to know whether he drove the pickup or the scout to work on the 13th.
Oh yeah! Let me correct something while I'm thinking about it…
I said that Heidstra owned a Blazer. Not true. A Blazer just happened to be sitting in the carport when Darden's investigators first went to his place to interview him. One of the investigators asked Heidstra if the vehicle he saw resembled the Blazer. Heidstra told him that it was about the same size and looked like the same kind of vehicle.
Heidstra refused to give details about the SUV (he also said that it could have been a van or a wagon) because he didn't get a good look at it. He was fifty-yards away (half a football field) and the vehicle turned and sped away soon after he turned in that direction. I could not determine whether the headlights were on or off. Not sure whether lights would have made the vehicle easier or harder to see. But it would have been good to know just to help complete the picture. He wrote a book about what he saw and heard that night but I'll be damned if I could find it. -- Jasper
