Both conclusions work if it were A.C. or Ron Shipp behind's Kato's Bungalow and not O.J.
Another play on this is that after Kato heard the thumps, he phoned O.J. to report the noise.
O.J. came out to investigate with Kato.
If thumps were indeed heard and Kato knew (or assumed) O.J. was inside, doesn't make more sense that Kato would buzz O.J., rather than going outside to investigate on his own?
