Speaking of playing up a persona, let's just say that Vannatter did the same thing.
Vannatter (although he had lived and worked in CA for at least 27 years) tried to make himself the folksy, hayseed from Indiana. He did it repeatedly...especially on the stand.
I think he did it to appear to be trustworthy but also as a cover for "errors' made.
