Mike, These things are more than slightly interesting to me. ……..Jones had to know that he was the cop in question as soon as he heard about a dog’s connection to the murders. Even if he was somehow able to tune out of all the news about the murders for weeks, Schwab July 21, 1994 testimony in the preliminary hearing had to ring bells all over the place that his statements were important to the prosecution. ………No one had to contact Jones directly. However, someone had to identify who he was to determine whether Schwab’s account of finding the dog and taking it home could be corroborated. This could be done with a few phone calls to see what patrol car in the vicinity of the murder scene was dispatched to answer the calls about the barking dog and who was assigned to that car. If there was a central dispatcher for all the patrol cars in the area the question could be answered by contacting the dispatcher. How could LAPD and LADA investigators not know how to contact the dispatcher? ……..My best guess is that a lot went on with Jones shortly after the murders and that it started with Brad Roberts as the detective that everyone in the system relied on to answer the questions you asked. Jones did not exist in a vacuum. He spoke with other cops. He appeared at roll calls were assignments were given and announcements were made, etc. He had friends, family members or neighbors who must have talked to him about the case. If he didn’t go to his supervisor within a month of the murders (I’m thinking one or two days) his supervisor had to have come to him. But their exchange need not have entailed more than a brief question and statement of what Jones recalled. If it meshed with what Schwab told Roberts that could have been the end of it. Jones could also have told his supervisor what happened, got a, “Yeah, we know,” answer and again, that would be the end of it for Jones. If anyone wanted to talk to him they knew where to reach him. ……...There was a division of labor between all of the investigators working on the case. Roberts was the only detective to interview Schwab and therefore the logical candidate to check out his story. Although West LA was officially off the case before Roberts interviewed Schwab, we know that Roberts, Fuhrman and Phillips were deeply involved in the case well past Schwab’s testimony in the preliminary hearing. ………Your questions are the ones that Lange, Hodgeman or Marcia would have asked Brad Roberts before Schwab’s testimony. But hiding Roberts was a high priority for the prosecutrion from the start. You can’t get Jones on the witness stand without calling attention to Roberts. In Marcia book she made it clear that she didn’t want Roberts. –Jasper
