Solitairea1, …This is a perfect example of how Fuhrman was able to get his racism to work for him. The important thing was not whether Fuhrman behaved like a racist on Rockingham in 1984. The important thing was what the hell was he doing there? ……… By not getting to the bottom of that question through documents and testimony that could have pinpointed the date, O.J.’s attorney’s left only O.J.’s self-interested statement to counter Fuhrman’s. A dispatcher would have remembered THAT dispatch if it was ever made. The people who repaired the windshield might have kept a record of when it was done. They surely would have had a record in ’89 when Fuhrman wrote his letter and even without a record in ’95 and ’96 when the issue came up again and again, THAT windshield repair job would have been hard to forget. ……. So, instead of nailing down the date independently of O.J.’s testimony and therefore Fuhrman’s veracity, his lawyers in ’89, ’94, ’95, ’96 and ’97 left it up for grabs. I don’t think they wanted to know the truth. I think they viewed the incident as a big negative and wanted to get past it as quickly as possible. If they had dug into it, they would have seen that Fuhrman’s version of the baseball bat incident doesn’t work in the “fall or winter of 1984” and they probably could have proved it. O.J. and Nicole did not get married until February 2, 1985. In the fall and winter of ’84 O.J. was not keen on marrying Nicole. From all accounts, it appears that he would not have married her if she had not gotten pregnant in January ’85. In no account that I’m aware of did O.J. call Nicole his “wife” until she was his wife. ……… Marcia used the baseball bat incident to show a pattern of O.J.’s violence against Nicole and to play upon the stereotypes of a racist to show that Fuhrman did not behave like one that day in public. MARCIA played “the race card.” It worked. The plaintiffs’ lawyers followed her lead. It worked again. With the debate about Fuhrman’s racial motivations in the O.J. case front and center, neither O.J. nor his lawyers looked at anything else. Stage magicians call this part of the act “misdirection.” …….. What does Fuhrman say about magic in Murder in Brentwood? Chapter 21, Center Stage, page 257: “After dinner, we went to the Magic Castle, and saw a first-rate magic show.” The passage was easy to find because Fuhrman thought enough of it to put The Magic Castle in his index. –Jasper
