John, ……Our disagreement about Kato parking in that position wasn’t about whether it was possible. It was about what it would take for him to it and how he would know why it mattered to be so precise. ……..The same conditions you laid out for Kato parking the Bronco would also apply to anyone else, including O.J. Nobody would notice a variation of six inches fore or aft from the original position with a slightly greater or lesser angle. But if you added one degree of angle in the same place or kept the same angle six inches farther back, the math wouldn’t work to get it around the corner. That’s the significance of what Brian and I found when we tried to see whether the Bronco could have ended up where it was if O.J. drove it from the driveway. Any way you figure it is a close call that can be made definitively only by experts taking precise measurements and doing the math. ……..I might have had an advantage over Brian with my background in professional scale model making in seeing that it was possible to check O.J.’s story against the photographic evidence and the relevant characteristics of the Bronco. I was used to seeing drawings and renderings that looked feasible but couldn’t work in the real world because the stylists “cheated a little” on critical dimensions. I was also used to making clay models, math models and working models from drawings and photographs that were altered “slightly” to make the models look better or work better than the real thing ever could. From the photos of the Bronco parked on Rockingham that I saw in relation to the driveway, the position did not impress me as being “cheated.” ……….Before I did the study I, like you, believed that someone (Shipp, not Kato) stole the Bronco to commit the murders and parked it “in the same place” to keep O.J. from realizing it had been moved. I didn’t think that a “little” deviation would matter. After I did the study it was obvious that any deviation outside of specific zones of variability – each zone having its own finite variables, was enough to invalidate the notion that anyone drove it from the driveway. If, on the other hand, the idea had been to make it appear that there was something odd about the way the Bronco was parked, there was plenty of time after O.J. left for the airport to reposition it the way Fuhrman falsely described it. That didn’t happen, which told me that everything associated with the Bronco’s parking position was a Monday morning afterthought. ……….There was a VERY narrow zone in which the Bronco could have been parked to match O.J.’s story both visually and mathematically and a VERY wide zone to invalidate his story mathematically. This is how you figure the odds. And this is why the odds are overwhelmingly on the side of O.J. telling the truth. Yes, it is possible for Kato to have laid down markers and hit them perfectly or driven through the compound. You still have to start, as you did, with the Bronco coming out of the driveway the last time O.J. drove it. You also have to show how the last person who drove it (Kato, O.J. or suspect X) from Bundy knew how to make it check out that way and what motivate him to be so precise in concept and execution. I can’t see anyone interested in the case other than Dick Wagner, Brian and I with those qualifications – and we didn’t do it. --Jasper
