Marilyn, …..Dyslexia, as you know, can be a huge advantage in performing some intellectual tasks. We do particularly well on creativity tests because the cognitive alacrity required to see things in different relationships are built into our wiring. What is obvious to normal people isn’t always obvious to us. ……. This works both ways. Dyslexia can be a liability in dealing with simple reading and writing tasks but an asset when performing some complex tasks of a different apparent nature. I say “apparent” because normal people often marvel at our ability to do things easily that they struggle with or can’t even begin to do while, in fact, these are the very “defects” that slow us down in our reading and writing. ………Anyone who studies the symbols b, d, p and q can tell that they ARE the same symbol. They just mean different things when they are flipped up or down, right or left. Dyslexics don’t have to study them to see that they are the same. We can also see them fixed in their functional orientation the way normal people do. It just takes longer for us to make one valid interpretation of anything were more than one might exist because we are naturally inclined to see all of them. Most people can make valid alternative interpretations the way we do, only it takes longer for them to see that they are valid. ………The common denominator seems to be speed. At some point “speed kills” for all of us when there are unexpected turns in the communication road. Dyslexic or not, we all have to slow down somewhere to get around the curves. –Jasper
