I have never said that I believed the "mommy's best friend" story. I don't. I never have. It always sounded stilted to me--like an adult trying to talk like a child. But I do believe that Sydney said she heard her mother arguing with Faye and there were a lot of cops around when she said it. I believe the "mommy's best friend" line was a deliberate crock, close enough to the truth to admit if the truth came out but vague enough to deny if it didn't. I believe it was leaked to give Fay a chance to think up a story that would fit the phone records the police and prosecutors were sure to find. I'm sure that they did find them (they were looking for anything they could get to hang O.J. so they had to know everything the phone company knew about Nicole's calls that night). And I believe that Katleen Sullivan would not have passed on the story if she didn't think there was some truth to it.
As I recall, there were no questions during the criminal trial about WHETHER Fay made the call or aproximately when she made it. The argument was over the nature of the conversation and whether Sydney could have heard her mother talking to someone other than Fay. The answer is no, she couldn't have.
Have you read Freed and Briggs' Killing Time? Christian Reichardt tells their investigator that Sydney, from everything he knew about her, probably said Faye and the cops spliced together a bunch of things she said at different times about other things to come up with that line for the press. He said that they did a lot of that in the case and it made him angry that so many things he know were wrong were getting reported as though they were true.
Another thing. The word "cry" can mean a lot of things that don't necessariy mean she was shedding tears. She may have been cursing a blue streak, the way I did the last time I "cried." The only thing one could have called crying was the hurt and the helplessnes in my voice that proceeded the cursing. To me, that's crying--even if it only lasts a second. Kids can pick un thigs like that. The only thing that may have impressed you was the cursing. But the key qusiton is realy pretty simple? Was Nicle happy about the conversation she had with Fay or was she demonstrably unhappy?
The only thing I care about with that conversation is whether or not it happened and the approximat time that it happened. I'm sure that it did (see The Science of Reason; the truth-teller/liar exercise. It really works. And you can use it to get the truth out of a liar like Faye the way Carl Douglas got the truth out of Ron Shipp about his "frienship" with Fuhrman. At some point even liars have to tell a little truth just to keep their biggest lies from being exposed.--Jasper
