If there is one thing all of us agree on is the folly of taking anyone's word in this case for anything. Sorting through all of the lies, rumors, misquotes and misstatements and honest mistakes to get at the facts is a bear. Please don't assume that I took anybody's word for anything. I didn't. When you've had a chance to read the entire book to put "A Closer Look" in context you will have no doubt about that.
Kate made a great suggestion. In fact, I don't know of any other way to sort through all of the available twisted, slanted and contadictory information than to set up a structure you can use to study ALL of it systematically. Making a list of what you know is a good place to start. But if you haven't done a lot of problems like this, let me warn you not to fall in love with any theory until you have tested it against all of the known facts.
As you know, some facts cancel out some possibilities no matter how well those possiblities mesh with other facts. I hope you know that I knew that too before I started accusing people of being murderers. To understand the way I think about solving any complex problem, think of a Rubiks Cub with four sides that appear to be right. If the other two sides are wrong all six are wrong. I had to toss out many a good four-sided theory to accept many a fact on the other two sides that I didn't like. But in the end, only the facts would do to make all of the pieces fall into place.
