No Kate, It isn't just you. It took a considerable amount of bobbing and weaving to avoid saying anything definitive. Why then is this a story at all? The only real value it has is tying a specific officer and a spicific reporter to what Sydney was supposed to have said. Combining what I've read before and heard on television I could only guess that Vasquez was the source of the stories about Sydney. This aricle makes it explicit.

I don't think the writer meant to say that Sydney heard her mother whimpering. I think she was trying to say the officer heard Sydney whimpering. But again, how could the editor have missed the importance of putting a name where the writer put a pronoun that could have stood for the girl or the woman? Something is wrong here and it cannot be explained away completely by incopetance. It took too much skill to avoid exposing a few key facts.--Jasper
