As near as I can tell, there were only 6 to 8 homicide detectives assigned to the West LA station. Whenever any possible homicide case was reported in that area the detectives on call for that time would automatically get the call. They worked in pairs. That means only three or four teams would have been available to respond to the initial call and Brad Roberts' name could have come up in the normal rotation. Just as Roberts and Fuhrman were replaced (sort of) when RHD go involved in the Bundy case, it would have been the same in the Don Simpson and Ennis Cosby cases.--Jasper
