Thanks Kate,

Now I know why Lange kept popping into my mind in connection with Sydney and why I remember the Kathleen Sullivan version of what happened.

I didn't hear what was said during that sidebar as it happened. Either it wasn't broadcast or I missed it for some other reason. But I did hear the Sullivan recap of what took place along with her personal knowlege of the story before it came up in court. And I did read it in the transcripsts much later when I was checking key sources for the book.

The BIG thing that I missed, however, was the fact that Lange assigned RON PHILLIPS to get the story about what Sydney actually heard. Cochran and Lange both regarded Phillips as a man of integrity despite his close friendship with Fuhrman. Cochran called him "a nice man." No one on the defense team saw how Phillips was able to hide the fact that Roberts was Fuhrman's partner, not Phillips' or why that was vital to figuring out where the Rockingham glove came from (direcly from the killer) and who planted it. Phillips made all of that misdireciton possible.

That's what it all comes down to--the trust everyone put in the personal integrity of Ron Phillips, dispite his abominable choice of a friend who wasn't what he appeared to be. Fuhrman fooled a lot of people, especially Lange who knew nothing about him. Phillips was Fuhrman's ticket into the investigation. Thruugh Fuhrman's leadership position in the Police Protective League, he could have worked behind the scenes to put Phillips in the position he was in to call him (Fuhrman) and Roberts to Bundy ahead of the detectives who were on call. Maybe Phillips wasn't what he appeared to be, either.

Getting a list of people Fuhrman represented in the PPL would seem to be a good place to start checking Phillips out. Once again, there has to be more.--Jasper
