As soon as I knew that O.J. was framed (which didn't mean he was innocent) I realized, for a long list of reasons, that he could be innocent only if the lead homicide detective was guilty. That's where I ran into the problem of Fuhrman's height, his shoe size, his alibi and the life or death importance of being 100 percent sure that that he would be the first detective on the scene. It was around this time that I found Springer's If O.J. Didn't... and bought it because the title asked the same quesiton I did and he had a chapter called "Fuhrman's Alibi."
One by one I nailed down the answers to all of these key questions. Fuhrman's shoe size and his way into the case (again, the only way it could work was if he knew he'd be first) were the toughest. When I realized Fuhrman's foot was on the same plane as the envelope in the pointing finger picture and I knew the size of the envelope, I could work out the size of the shoe. But assuming that the elite RHD would have been called first if police knew from the start that it was going to be a high-profile case, getting all of that together gave me fits.
You see, one of the big reason's I thought about Fuhrman as a murder suspect to begin with was the bruise on Nicole's skull that matched the butt end of "the" probable murder weapon. It it a particlar silent kill technique I learned in the Army, as opposed to the hand-over-the-mouth technique that O.J. was shown by a Navy SEAL for the Frogmen movie. That told me that the killer probably had military training. I learned later that Fuhrman had been a marine. But a man trained in this kind of operaion would have used a lookout (I didn't know about Roberts) and a dress rehersal. The Canter murder served the requirments of a rehersal.
Either shourtly before or shortly after the Canter murder (never solved) Fuhrman tried unsuccessfully to get into the Robbery/Homicide Division where he would have known from the Canter murder what he had to do to insure that he ended up on the case. But because he couldn't do that, he had to figure out a way to achieve the same result. Ron Phillips was vague about when he became the West Sid Homicide Coordintor. When Nicole and Ron were killed, he'd only been in that positon for about a year--around the time of Canter's murder and Fuhrman's attempts to get into RHD. Phillips' job was to assign detectives to ANY possible homicide committed in his West Side territory. Nicole's body was lying with her face partially covered by her hair. Riske (as the case would be with any patrolman) did not move her body around to get a good look at her. He entered to crime scene and touched Ron's eyeballs (blue black fibers from his uniform?)-- only because he thought that Goldman might be alive -- while his partner called for backup. One of the Officers called Sgt. Rossi, the acting watch commander who reported to Lt. Spangeler, Capt. Dial, and a bunch of other people, includigng Detective III Phillips, the West Side coordinator. Only after Nicle's body could be identifed (Fuhrman could do it) would the RHD have been called.--Jasper
