Jasper, Haven't located my copy yet. For as good as I am at details, I am horrible at personal organization. :-)
However, in this book, this intelligence squad kept tabs on the rich and famous, the politically connected, the stars and the athletes. Nobody ever got arrested but it was a giant info gathering operation. They were never allowed to follow through and arrest anybody. Any time they tried, they got into deep dip with the powers that be. Gates was caught at this and supposedly did away with the files but Rothmiller and others say that it is not true. That they were moved out to private storage sheds. (Odd, OJ was connected to a storage company via his friend Hughes)
Rothmiller says that info was kept one where their favorite restuarants were, who they associated with, what were their favorite foods, their comings and goings at the airport. That a person was (and maybe still is) assigned to stay at LAX to watch the comings and goings and make note of it. They were even allowed to go behind the counters and use the computers to check out and print out things which is totally against the rules. I have always maintained that it was known exactly when OJ arrived at the airport and when he left and where he was going. One simple phone call to the guy on duty out there could have gotten that info. and pretty early too. Also it could have been learned ahead of time if he were leaving town and when and where he was going.
It was in To Protect and To Serve that the driver for Mayor Bradley was one of these officers (unknown to Bradley) and for Years he dutifully reported and documented every move that Bradley made back to the police department. That Gates used this info (like laying the file down in front of Bradley or the City Council for them to see that he had it) to strong arm them into doing things his way. That is how he stayed around so long and was able --for a while--to refuse to be fired.
If--as Rothmiller states in LA Secret Police--that they let a killer cop (killed his homosexual lover/informant in front of his partner) go and just retire via telephone and transfer the partner to another assignment because they didn't want to be embarrassed over having a "gay" cop, how far would they go to cover up for MF and the others in the OJS case? charlie
