I can't seem to let this idea go that pressure was building within Furhman as 94 went on.
The lawsuit over the "knife' and the racial remarks was on-going and coming up in court.
In April, he is frantically trying to get a conviction by actually taking evidence home and destroying it in his zeal.
Sometime during this time, Clayton and perhaps others have made complaints.
Perhaps the pressure was building within the LAPD to fire him---and he was close to his 20 years. He says himself that he had "planned" to retire then anyway. What if this plan was "Mark you have to go at the 20 year time? We won't deal with you anymore. You are costing up money, screwing up our cases, bringing bad publicity our way, etc.etc.etc."
This could have been building for a LONG time. He is turned down for the job he wanted so badly and perhaps told why.
He was frantically trying to find that BIG CASE to make him a "hero" so that they would look stupid firing him.
I am not saying that he hadn't planned to Simpson murders for a long time but it might not have become a REAL plan for action until it looked like he would leave the LAPD pretty much in disgrace. A forced retirement.
He reminds me of the firemen you hear about that will become an arsonist just to be the hero in the fires.
There are many cops in LA with the same problem as Furhman but have they cost the department and the city BIG money in lawsuits, ended up in the headlines, perhaps has complaints to the point of nobody wants him investigating his/her case, or nobody wants to be his partner?
I think should be part of what we consider as MF's motivation. It doesn't take away from the other but adds to it.
Perhaps the department had even come to understand he was dangerous and was just trying to make it through with him until his 20 year date? To fire him outright would have put a stamp on him stating that the lawsuits, etc. were legit and we had a rogue cop as a homocide detective.
