The homosexual thing may be a web with threads that touch a hell of a lot of people. Dominick Dunne produced The Boys in the Band, a '70s play about gay men dealing with their sexual identity that Dunne turned into a movie. That doesn't make him gay but it makes him a focal point for gay interests and possibly somone with explosive secrets about Hollywood movers-and-shakers. But if the man "kept" a gay man who went on to murder a famous gay man, it's hard to argue that he isn't gay or that he isn't attracted to dangerous men.
Given all of that, the thing that struck me most about the Dunne/Fuhrman conneciton was the fact that Dunne's fisrt big success came with The Boys in the Band. Fuhrman claims that his inspiration to become a writer was Joseph Wambaugh's The Chior Boys. He mentioned it several times in his book. But I saw the Chiorboys and it had nothing to do with "the character" he said he was creating on the McKinney tapes. There was, however, a scene involving a young gay man and a cop--an ex-marine--who accidentally kills the gay man during a flashback to a traumaic war experience. Could it be that Fuhrman's real inspiration was The Boys in the Band? ...Nah, the similarities are probably coincidental--like the hundreds of "coincidences" I discovered researching the movies in The Smoking Gun. --Jasper
