When you do a complex analysis like this you can't just go with the first obvious answer and not look back. You have to examine it from all sides and see where you might me wrong. Arnelle's return was my first guess, too - obviously. But with a minimum of reflection I saw that it couldn't' have been Arnelle. Rosa Lopez had to know Arnelle's voice as well as she knew O.J.'s. Besides, if it was Arnelle, was she talking to herself - in two different voices - men's voices?
Rosa Lopez and Arnelle Simpson both guessed at the time in question. Arnelle said that she got home around 12:30. From your own experience in estimating time, you know that she was probably off in one direction or another by a few minutes at least. Rosa said that she FIRST heard the voices (that's voices, not voice) at around midnight. Probably a little earlier or a little later - possibly much earlier or later. Her guess about when the voices stopped was mitigated by her fear just as Eva Stein's estimate of how long the dog barked before her boyfriend came home was mitigated by her eagerness to see him.
In both cases you're talking about people whose perception of time was distorted in the same elongated direction by their marginal state of wakefulness, the fact that they did not check the clock and their eagerness for an unpleasant situation to end. Time does seem to fly when you're having fun and drag when you're not. Therefore you can't make an exact match between the time Rosa estimated that she LAST heard the voices and the time Arnelle estimated that she got home. You can use it only as a very general guide with a probable separation of time of several minutes. And you can't stop there. The real gap that you have to be concerned about is the one between midnight and 3:30 a.m.
In Legacy of Deception Steven Singular quoted an anonymous source close to the investigation who told him about Fuhrman and another detective going to Rockingham at 3:30 on the 13th expecting to find incriminating evidence against O.J. then getting into an argument when they didn't find any. The only source that story could have come from was Mark Fuhrman or the other detective. Fuhrman and Roberts were the only detectives who talked to her on the 13th.
If you'd read Iago you'd know that my position is that Fuhrman started the rumor himself after talking to Rosa to see if she could recognize his voice. If you'd read Iago you'd know my reasons for believing that the "small army" of conspirators on Rockingham were surprised to learn after the fact that Rosa's quarters were situated where they were and that she could have heard them. Thus, the story about a 3:00 a.m. visit to cover Rosa's testimony and to give the illusion that Fuhrman planted the glove AFTER he signed in on Bundy at 2:10.
Yes, John, I'm saying that Mark Fuhrman started the rumor that he planted the glove. He is an extremely intelligent man and it was an extremely intelligent move. The planted glove story was only his real alibi. On close inspection the seminar story and the credit card story would never fly. We all know enough about how the LADA office operated at the time to know that they would wink at what he did if they thought he was "framing a guilty man." And if push came to shove, as it did, he could prove - as he did prove, that he couldn't have done it. Meanwhile the defense is running around trying to prove that he did, and discounting Rosa's statement that she heard the voices much closer to midnight. Creating confusion about time was Mark Fuhrman's forte-and the killer's. --Jasper
