Jason didn't say when he last went back to the place he described.
As a kid, a ball might have gone over the fence and he went there to retrieve it. But as a teenager and a young adult he may have had no occasion to go in the Salinger's yard or to take the path leading to Katio's bungalow. It could be a simple case of his memory going to work to help out his dad. As you pointed out, it's not likely that O.J.'s criminal defense team would spend so much time talking about the area where the glove was dropped and miss the trees that Jason described--Jasper
