Mezzaluna was about a half a mile from Nicole's condo and a straight shot to the freeway. It was Sunday night so there wasn't much traffic. Under those conditions most people I know drive somewhere around 70 miles per hour. Adding 10 miles and averaging 70 miles an hour he still could have made it with no sweat if he left at 8:30 or 8:35. In fact, that makes the timing just about right for the two quick calls from Dana Point that are on the bill.
It would be great for me if he could not have made the trip because it would have been confirmation that there was a cell phone in the car (I'm still sure that Denise had one that she didn't want anyone to know about). But a 60 or 70 mile trip with only a mile or two not on the freeway on a Sunday night is well within reason.
By the way, the point about how bad people are in estimating time (a point I've been knocking myself out to make, which is crucial for a cop with inside knowledge of this) was driven home to me yesterday. A fellow designer came up to me as asked what time it was. I told her, "a quarter after" (it was really 12 and a half after). She said after what, ten or eleven? -- Jasper
