I spent a good part of yesterday looking up other driving directions/times locations and time in a book store going thru every road atlas they had--some on the clearance rack from 99 and 2000.
I could find nothing of those last three roads in the road atlases--not even one that was exclusively for truckers.
On those first driving directions maps, it was made to appear that those were a road of the same nature as I 5. I found no evidence of that.
Then I came home and started looking again. What I found was is that those last 3 roads are county roads. I had an LA map at home that extends down through Orange County. They are of the same color (gray) and nature as any street in LA.
I also found that unlike what it appeared--that the Browns lived at the South end of Dana Point not far from where I 5 curves into the shore, they actually live on the North end almost to Laguana Beach.
I found the three roads on that map and found that they travel throu a state park and thru a golf course in DAna Point.
I found that in 94 (without highway 73) they would have been on this wrong for even longer than the driving maps now give. They would have gotten on it from I5 not 73 (which is closer to Dana Point).
The only other alternative is to keep on I5 until it does curve into the shoreline, get off, and travel back through Dana Point (the whole city) along the Pacific Coast Highway which is dotted with businesses, restuarants, groceries, service stations, etc. (I looked in the Dana Point yellow pages).
However, staying on I5 and then getting off adds considerably to the length of the trip plus the trip back thru Dana Point. Because of the big loop and curve it makes, it might add 10 milies if not more to the trip.
But sometimes shorter is not faster. For fun, I clicked in shortest trip--and it routed me down the Pacific Coast Highway which of course would not be the fastest trip due to stop and go traffic through all those coastal cities.
Also, depending if they left from Bundy or Vincente Blvd. they get routed different ways. One takes them part of the way on the 405 and then to the I5. The other goes onto I5 directly.
The 405 is the road that was allegedly so traffic filled according to Parks.
Remember that both this highways are the major North -South highways being used on a Sunday night to return home by anybody who has been away for the weekend.
My experience with our (I 75 ) on Sunday night (any time of the year) is that it becomes heavily travelled on Sunday night with people who are trying to get home to go to work on Monday.
