I have taken a closer look and had Prien look at the maps as well.
I have learned that not only are these last 3 roads county roads that go thru a park and a golf course, the are at least 1000 ft in elevation and are curvey. Also, there are subdivision streets on both sides in areas with streets from those subdivisions that empty out onto that road as well as several intersections that cross the road where there is either a stop sign or a stop light. Has to be because the cross street cross the road.
In 1994, they would have been on this road for as much as 10 miles. Or from I 5 south of Dana Point and had to drive back thru the entire town (a coastal town built much like Ft Lauderdale, Panama City, Daytona Beach, or Myrtle Beach) with stop and go traffic all the way through.
If you recall they have always said Monarch Bay or Laguana Beach much more often than Dana Point when speaking of it. That is because it is much closer to Laguana Beach than to Dana Point proper.
I doubt that much more than 45 MPH could be driven on the better part of this road or coming back thru town.
Add the close to 3 miles at the beginning part of the trip---either way--from the Mezz or from South Bundy--which involves LA city traffic, stops, lights, turns, etc. before ever getting to the I 405 or the I 5.
When I times my 75 mile trip several weeks ago, I was going 80MPH when I passed the 75 miles to the city sign. So I was already on the highway at top speed when I began timing and stayed mostly from 75 MPH and 80MPH the whole time. Never got below 70 on the highway. It took 63 minutes. If part of that trip had been county roads or city roads, the time would have been higher.
When I mapped out this trip a few years ago--prior to I 73 being finished, the miles given on different sites were in the 70"s--71, 73, etc. not the 63 or 67 given now.
