Prien, Riske was a simpleton, a young guy with not too much experience. What do simpletons know, even from just watching cop movies and reading detective stories: Don't touch the phone!!!!! I think he would have (or should have) called for back up immediately when he saw Nicole's body. He wouldn't, shouldn't and probably didn't walk into the house "looking for other wictims or the killer", without first having called for backup. Not in his job discription. So somebody else, somebody like Fuhrman, checked the phone and got the last call. Riske didn't mention using the telephone in the Grand Jury hearings and was for some reason not called to testify in the Prelims. Miss Marple
