They found out about the Lizza Borden thing was the old papers found hidden in the prosecutors house after he died. It may have been later when they were tearing it done, not sure.
It was this and a woman who passed the murderer and remembered how he smelled. And happened to mention it to her son in law years later. And they started putting it together. the son in law had worked for the muderer as a kid. He knew the smell and then the decribtion fit. I think maybe the papers had to do with Mr. Borden having the son. There was a second will, they figured, that would disinherate Lizza and her sister. How much you wanta bet the defense has it. The prosecution went along to cover up some bank dealing that would have affected the state politicians and Lizza to get the inheratence.
