Kari, The sobbing could have been at any time before Sydney went to sleep. It could have been a mistake on Sydney's part to associate the sobbing with a phone call. It might have been as you say after she had heard the phone ring but Sydney might not know whether her Mom had hung up when she was sobbing.
You are correct about that knife. (and the condo contents) Hell, they didn't even get the answering machine tapes for at least a week and perhaps a lot longer and when they did, they had to get them from the Browns. They may or may not have included all the calls if the Browns censored any of the tapes as being not favorable to Nicole.
If I recall the knife that they did find was a kitchen knife variety. I am not sure on that but believe so. A butcher type knife if my memory serves me.
