It is more of an unconcious thing with most people. I worked around blood a lot, but never thought that much about it smelling. I doubt that I would ever say I smell blood. But everyone has smelled blood at some time. The subconcios knows what it is. You would not notice the smell so much as just have a feeling of something is wrong. This would make you look around. The couple would have had that feeling of unease if the blood was there when they were walking and would naturally have looked around and down. Lots of times when you just feel and unease it is because you subconciously smell something that you subconciously connect with something wrong. And one person may find it causes unease and others find it plesant. I can't stand the smell of bananas and can smell them several rooms away. But if they are a way and I do not get a good enought smell to register Bananas, I get a feeling of unease and will end up looking around till I find them.
So it would not be a "I smell blood" but more of an uneasy feeling that causes you to be more aware of the enviornment and look around. They may not have seen the bodies in the dark, but would have seen blood on the sidewalk, especially as they got to Dorothy were the light was better.
