The black haired Mommy thing was Sidney's way of dealing with grief. One thing with kids is that parents are neccessary for survival. So if something happens to a parent then they try to replace them. If she could pretend then she would have her mother and feel safe.
Kids have what is called as magical thinking. That is why even thought they seem to be dealing with a death OK a professional needs to see them. In this case they did get the help. And a therapist would probably not interfere with seeing Denise as a black haired mom if it helped the transition.
