I found this old book in the library about the history of the LAPD. Published long before the Rodney King etc. The LAPD was corrupted from the inception. The goal has always been to keep the rich from having the "undesirables" in town. Back in the great depression if a poor person came in they arrested them and forced them to leave. The Blacks and minoriteis did not come until WW2 to work in the defense plants. They made sure they stayed in their Getto away from the rich white. They were arrested if they were caught in the wrong area unless they were going to and from work. Chief Parker started the secret police. It was to gather information on people, especially the movie and politicians, so that they could control them thru blackmail. The studios were all controlled by the police cause they had stuff on the actors. Daryl Gates was Parker's driver and in charge of the secret police and the blackmail files. You have to understand that there have been very few police chiefs from the start. There were only a couple of very short term police chiefs between them. Another book I read was about 2 police that were murder for hire guys. They got caught because they got stopped, I think someplace besides LA, with a body in the car. Unfortunately I don't remember the tital of either book, but both were comparatively old. Like 15 plus years or so.
