Miss Marple,

I'm with you. Anyone who isn't frightened by the issues you raised simply isn't paying attention.

I was recently at a courtroom in downtown Detroit where everyone EXCEPT cops in uniform were sent thorough a METLE detector before they were allowed to enter the main area of the building. With just a little imagination I'm sure you can think of a dozen ways to get around that security measure.

The only thing you have to do to beat any of these security systems is to watch the patterns the way your son did and act accordingly. This is what makes U.S. Army Rangers and our other elite fighting units so effective (and, trust me, they are VERY effective). They have a simple system of attack for countering any system of defense. The advantage always goes to the attacker if he is properly trained, armed and equipped if he knows what he's up against.

The operative word here is "system." Anything that is done in a predictable systematic way can be countered just as systematically. If you don't introduce a huge element of chance (unpredictability equals risk) into your "system" of defense you are not only telling the enemy that he can beat you, you're telling him when, where and how to do it. Think of a saboteur watching a sentry walk his post along the same route at precise intervals every day for weeks and you've got the picture. --Jasper
