The phrase I used was "…freelance 'Christian' terrorists or suicidal bigots of any stripe (like Timothy McVey). I did make a distinction between them ("or"), but I'm not sure that I should have. McVey justified the bombing in the name of race (Randy Weaver), the Second Amendment (Randy Weaver) Religion (Weaver and Koresh) and freedom from federal tyranny in general. What he did made him a martyr, according to the teaching of racist "Christian" theology.
It doesn't matter what McVey's true religious beliefs might have been, what he did was consistent with what the Ku Klux Klan and other fundamentally racist groups have done in THE NAME of Christianity for well over a century. It was something that people in groups like this would identify with and might try to emulate because the time is right to get away with it.
The point I was making with McVey is the fact that he was a SUICIDAL bomber and a bigot with an agenda. He went out of his way to get caught, tried, convicted, "mocked" and put to death by the state (like Jesus) in a progression of moves he choreographed that were guaranteed to give his name ethereal life. That was the whole idea of the bombing. McVey wanted to be on television. He wanted the world to see what he looked like and to hear what he had to say. He wanted to live in history for all time. He followed a formula that as guaranteed to give him all of those things, including a form of immortality. That doesn't sound much a true atheist to me. --Jasper
