This is a heck of a lot bigger than O.J. Simpson. I don't know the man and sometimes he makes me so mad that I don't care to know him. But I do know this:
O.J. Simpson is an enormously important symbol of issues involving race, class, gender and justice in North America. He is not a killer. He is not a spouse-abuser. Nevertheless, racial harmony, honest journalism and the integrity of the criminal justice system on this continent have been set back half a century because the vast majority of North Americans think he is. Moreover, many white people feel in their bones that anyone who disagrees is intellectually, morally or emotionally inferior. That's the vast majority of African Americans…. And that's just for starters.
THAT'S the problem that can't be ignored by anyone who cares about truth and justice - and a truthful search for justice anywhere. To the extent that truth and justice really matter to any of us, the O.J. case is our fight. As a wise observer recently reminded us, " God helps those who help themselves." --Jasper
