Why couldn't Karpf be the person who yelled the "hey, hey, hey!"?
Your estimates of the time he arrived, Heidstra's estimate of when he heard the voices, and the fact that Karpf himself mentioned that the Akita was barking angrily toward him when he went out to check his mail--all suggests that he might've been the source.
If an angry dog was approaching me, "Hey,Hey, Hey" would be a natural reaction.
