Some others who said that the dog barked for 45 minutes or longer were Lewis Karpf and Mark Storfer. But all of the people who reported the longer barking time demonstrated that they could not tell the difference between the Akita's "persistent bark" and the little black dog's and all of them had trouble determining exactly where the sound was coming from. On top of that, they didn't seem to recognize pauses in the Akita's barking that Schwab noticed and Karpf alluded to. Sure they heard barking well past 11:00, but did they hear the Akita all that time. I don't think so.
Heidstra didn't. Schwab didn't. I don't think that Schwab ever even heard the little black dog or paid attention to it. From everything I could piece together, the dogs were sometimes barking together. Sometimes one dog would bark and the other would not. Sometimes both dogs would pause - but not long enough for anyone to take note of and the little dog took over when the Akita left with Schwab. When Boztepe and Rasmussen brought the Akita back to Bundy from Montana around midnight, Storfer never realized that it had been gone. Stein and Karpf said something similar.
Speaking of Stein and Karpf…
I believe you said something about detecting a strain in Karpf's relationship with Stein on the night of the murders. I think that's an easy one. He'd been out of town for three days, yet they didn't even great each other until more than an hour later. She saw him downstairs before then but he didn't see her and didn't even know that she had seen him there, which suggest to me that she looked down on him from the upper floor and went back to the bedroom. They didn't talk that night about the barking dog that had awakened her and kept her awake. And Stein didn't know when he got in until she asked him the nest morning. Yea, this couple was having problems…
I look at the garage door light in Nicole's garage the same way I look at the dome light in O.J.'s Bronco (the bulb was removed) and Nicole's front gate buzzer (didn't work - but should have). If the killing was planned and carried out the way I say it is in Iago and The Smoking Gun, the killer would have made sure that the light didn't come on and he was the only one who could get into the garage after Nicole got home. If you can make a whole Jeep appear and disappear on cue, a garage light has to be easy.
I'm sure that the killer's SUV was parked in the garage and the lookout's vehicle (car? truck? SUV?) was parked on Bundy where Schwab said the Akita barked most furiously.
It had always bothered me that the pawprints went south instead of north AND south because I somehow missed this portion of Schwab's testimony. According to my lookout scenario, the lookout had to position his vehicle to be in the best place to observe all approaches to 875 South Bundy and to be able to go in and out of the gate quickly with the least chance being seen. The northeast corner of Bundy and Gorham fits that requirement but if there really was a lookout posted there (where a soldier would have posted) there should have been some evidence of it.
Between Karpf, Schwab, you and Rovaan, I think I have it. Remember what Rovaan said about Kato following Goldman's scent south on Bundy? Maybe that's what he did with the lookout, too. --Jasper
