Because Black Americans are seen a threat in the eyes of whites. It is a basic fear response. It's the same response you will see, prehaps in yourself, if you are forced to live in a house with strangers you don't know. The competition for limited resources (real or imagined) causes a basic grouping of people based on precieved likenesses in an effort to contol or maintain their position in the environment. This will happen every time animals espesially humans are put together and then tought that they are different form one another. The only way to defeat this is to re-teach the population that we really are not different. This will be an incredibly difficult and long process to pull off at this point.
