You've heard the story about the three blind men who were asked to identify an elephant by touch. Each man touched a different part of the elephant and came up with a different answer. Not one of them identified the elephant. But if they had put their individual perceptions together they may have been able to figure it out…provided that one of them knew what an elephant was…and all of them were willing to abandon their original idea.
The Bundy murder case is the elephant that all of us have touched in different places. That's why over half of Iago is taken up with e-mails from various people who did the same thing. All of us have strengths and weaknesses that help and hinder us individually. If you study the e-mails in the book or the posts on the Iago Discussion Board you can see the same patterns. That means you can see the same analytical traps that each of us is prone to falling into.
One pattern I picked up way back when I was posting on the Court TV Discussion Board was the ease with which everyone could see the mistakes of others (whether they were really mistakes or not). Seeing our own was the problem. The trick was to be our own worst critics. That's where the breakthroughs come for all of us. It was true on the Court TV Discussion Board. It was true in the e-mail correspondence and it is true on this discussion board. If you REALLY want the truth you HAVE TO listen to others.
About the trial run…
In studying the case I found that most of the trial runs had already been made before the murders and the frame-up. Sadly, the prosecution of innocent people is old hat. Remember the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s and Reign of Terror in France? History is full of examples, many of which were made into movies. The Ox-Bow Incident (a lynch mob hangs three innocent men) is one of them. Sgt. Rutledge (a black U.S. Cavalry sergeant is tried for the rape and murder of a white girl and the murder of her father) is another. The principles of group psychology involved are all well documented and well-known by serious students of psychology.
Then there was the murder of Bret Cantor, which looks a hell of a lot like a trial run to me for the Bundy murders. But I don't see the Bundy murders as a trial run for something bigger - although it has been used that way and will continue to be used that way until the real killer is tried and convicted. What I see is one man's obsession with black men and white women with O.J. Simpson as the symbol for the things he hated the most and the things he wanted the most. I see a killer who got ALL of his ideas about the case from the movies. I see the Bundy murders and the framing of O.J. Simpson as the stone that killed two birds, and at least three people (Canter, Nicole and Goldman). --Jasper
