Actually, what they usually do in cases like this is try to match to a CERTAIN shoe.
By that I mean, the markings on the bottom, the wear pattern, a cut or a gouge or whatever.
What we had here was a new or almost new pair of shoes. Deliberate? You bet!
Had they found the shoes and matched them to the print, it would have been different.
On that forensics show I saw on cable which told how to measure the size, etc., it also told that unless the print matched an ACTUAL pair of shoes owned and worn by the suspect, the prints were WORTHLESS.
It does not Matter if the suspect owns a pair of shoes in the same brand or size but whether or not the markings on the sole (much like ballistics tests) match the prints at the scene.
I believe this is why a "new" pair of shoes were chosen. They could not be matched. It also leads to the notion that whomever did this was very MUCH aware of the this process and how it works--LIKE A COP>
