IMO, your questions are the right ones. Since Roberts had taken the first call from McKinnon, followed by Van Atter.
Either one of these guys were the source of the info leading to the threats or someone else in the LAPD was. Whatever the case, the police are the only possible source.
It was only in late July that Lange was asked to follow-up on the McKinnon info.
If Jasper's theory is right, then the issue of the leak/threat is explained.
Regarding A.C., more info on his involvement could answer many of the questions surrounding this case. He might even be the link to explain the actions of the LAPD and the reasons behind them.
He may indeed have been a double agent as you suggest, or may have just cut a deal.
