I was reminded of a time when my brother was around 15 years old--living in a nice enough neighborhood. My Dad got so mad at him he about croaked and about killed my brother when he found that my brother and his friends were getting their "kicks" by cutting through people's yards after dark and peering into windows or knocking on the windows and just generally out pranking.
He made it CLEAR to my brother that the owners would be well within their rights to fire a gun, or call the cops, etc., or any other thing to Protect themselves and their families from any person peering into the windows, knocking or lurking around the yard.
It is as Prien says, a person within a house would be in their rights to point a gun at a person shining a light into the house not identifying themselves.
I still believe that the cop had his gun out already and was not Quick Draw McGraw here.
Also, how fast did he fire 9 shots? Wouldn't firing one or two be enough to realize the person is not firing back?
