My sister worked as the human resources manager in a branch of a large retail store. She got there the hard way with long hours and hard work. She knew the laws like a lawyer and could handle people. Since she felt she needed to set an example she wore very nice clothes and shoes. Not high heeled but not tennis shoes. She walked for years in dress shoes on the floors of the store until her feet broke down till it was doctor time, etc. Then the company decided to get rid of the high pay people thru out the company. They offered early retirement. But with the offer that my sister got came some new job duties. One of which was to spend a much larger part of the day walking the floor and out of her office. Of couse they knew that she physically could not do this. So she was forced out. Most of her retirement was in stock and it hit an all time low and too early for even social secruity for many years. So for a couple of years she worked at jobs way below her skill level. One very unhappy camper. But she fooled them all. A large company was having trouble employee wise. They wooed her to work for them at high pay and gave her a golf cart to get around. It was a resort so sports clothers were good dress and shoes did not need to be so fashionable. Comfort, money and respect. She stayed there and retired at good retirement. So she has plenty of money and proved that the older gal was the gal that was needed for the company that needed good employees and someone smart in the laws. The first company did have a retirement party that was a real wing ding before they sent her out to starve. I was surprized at how many doors she had opened as a woman and how the company did see her as a pioneer for women and how women's organizations saw her as a role model. So take heart the best may be yet to come.
