Jean, To blame solely corporate America is TOO SIMPLISTIC.
How easy would the airlines have found the notion to beef up security at the time that the government was claiming that there WAS no problem.
No matter how loud TWA and Boeing yelled that the TWA 800 was NO mechanical problem, they were drowned out by the FBI agent Kallstrom and Clinton Administration.
How easy would it be at that time to suggest that there was a problem when that current administrations big claim to fame was the economy.
We have seen in the last 2 weeks just what an economic problem it causes (airlines, hotels, restuarants, cabs, theme parks, etc., etc., etc) when terroism is involved.
Had it been exposed (2 months prior to the Atlanta Oympics and a few months before the 96 presidential election) the economy might have tanked out THEN and not now.
It would have called for a military response that was a definite no-no for that crowd.
No, just blaming corporate America for this is not correct nor the whole answer.
There was NO WILL to confront this problem for many reasons. Many of them economic but many were political.
Louis Freeh (I'm no fan) has publicly stated since he left office that the Clinton Administration tied his hands in prosecuting the terrorists of the Khobar Towers for political reasons.
I am not blaming Clinton completely. I believe that besides many Dems (like Sen. Kerry) who knew that the TWA 800 was a shoot down--so did a bunch of Reps. BUt at the same time, many Dems kept the "secret" as well.
Perhaps there were some who truly thought it was in our best interests to do so.
But the "unintended' consequences of such INACTION is 9-11-01.
