I knew it because of the research on the Russians in Afghanistan that I did for the book. But only two people I talked to about it gave a damn. They were all concerned with things other than principle - practical things like fighting communism (mostly Republicans) or keeping drugs out of certain neighborhoods (Democrats or Republicans, depending on which neighborhood we were talking about).
Political expedience is the real devil here, the expedient of getting elected and the expedient of APPEARING to do something that "the people" care about (in any particular election year). You can't build a foreign or domestic policy on political expediency. It always comes back to bite you. --Jasper
