I have not ruled out the possibility that anyone at Mezzaluna other than Keith Zlomsowitch, Ron Goldman and Michael Nigg were involved in illegal drug activities. But those activities need not have had anything to do with illegal drugs or the murders. "Off the clock" work is a common practice. Taxicab drivers do it on short runs to keep from paying the company its share of the fare. The practice in job shops allows the employer to get the benefit of someone's labor without paying its share of the employee's taxes and other benefits. The employee gets anonymity and usually more cash in-hand than he would otherwise get.
One of the reasons I was so quick to agree with you, Kari, Allita and others who were commenting on the Mezzaluna employees' testimony at the time was because of Ron's association with Cantor, Nigg and Zlomsowitch. All of them were closely associated with illegal drug operations.
Assume for the purpose of analysis that Fuhrman planned the killing to draw attention to himself as the world's greatest detective and the avenger for white womanhood despoiled by the unchecked animal appetites of black men. You plan to kill Nicole and blame O.J. for the crime. To maximize the chance that O.J. will receive the death penalty, you have to create "special circumstances" that include a particularly grisly murder scene and more than one victim. You have a ton of racist baggage, some of which is sure to be exposed when you appear in the national spotlight. You are roughly O.J.'s height and build. You wear the same size shoes. You have shopped where he buys his clothes. You leave identical footprints with your toes pointed straight ahead and you drive a vehicle that might be mistaken for his. In fact, your plan depends on these similarities and the difficulty most people have telling the difference between your old Scout and his new Bronco. You have a couple of phony alibis ready to go. If one doesn't work another one will - provided that no one takes you seriously as a murder suspect to begin with.
To accomplish that trick, you need what magicians call "misdirection." Your experience in the criminal justice system has taught you that the prosecution and the defense will pursue opposite extremes of whatever evidence they are left with. Therefore you know what evidence to leave them with to produce the optimum effect. You have no doubt that the prosecution will consider only the evidence that implicates O.J. and the defense will bend over backward to ignore, obscure or attack the evidence that implicates you if it also appears on the surface to implicate O.J. The closer you stay to the real timeline of the killing in your false timeline and in the other evidence that appears at first glance to implicates both you and O.J. the more vigorously you know the defense will work for you. They will dismiss you as suspect as quickly as possible and concentrate on someone who puts O.J. (and you) as far from the evidence as possible.
You can do all of that with your selection of the second victim if you can tie him closely enough to drug trafficking in LA. That will make him the possible focus of the attack from the defense point of view. For Mark Fuhrman, Ron Goldman (associated with Cantor's Dragonfly Club as well as with Cantor, Nigg and Zlomsowitch, stepmother Patty formerly married to big-time drug dealer) fits the bill perfectly. Besides, he's a Jew. As long as he can be made to looked like a victim of bad timing, both the prosecution and the defense will argue a scenario that puts you in the clear.
DeBello told the truth on the witness stand to the best of his ability. Where he got some things wrong, the context of his responses showed how and why he made his mistakes. His testimony indirectly supports O.J.'s alibi. O.J.'s alibi is the only testimony in the case that is consistent with all of the facts on a 10:34-10:47 timeline. DeBello had nothing to do with the planning or the cover-up of the murders. Only the killer's selection of Goldman as his second victim and his knowledge of what evidence to leave behind to direct attention away from him makes it seem that way if you know O.J. is innocent. O.J. is innocent. So is DeBello. --Jasper
