The way Vannatter handled the blood and the way Lange handled the shoes took me though a maze of twisted pipes that looked as though they were going gong to meet somewhere in a police conspiracy. They never did, not in the way it appeared they might. For instance, you noticed a way no one has ever mentioned how evidence could have been transferred. You made a great case for how it could have been done in the shoes. But the only blood evidence that hurt O.J. was confined to the five drops on Bundy.
The blood drops on O.J.’s driveway help him and nobody saw blood on the socks until August. O.J.’s blood in the Rockingham glove almost certainly came from the lab. The way Yamauchi explained it, it’s amazing he didn’t get more of O.J.’s DNA on the glove when he “accidentally” spilled the blood from O.J.’s sample vial. The glove with O.J.’s blood in it (and high concentrations of EDTA) just happened to be lying there. And the spill just happened to help explain away the missing blood. The blood in the Bronco also worked for O.J. There just wasn’t enough of it (one diluted drop spread out over a wide area). Furthermore, the people who claimed they saw it, were TOLD by Roberts or Fuhrman that it was there before they looked – though the tinted glass. Marcia said “somebody” told her but she didn’t look.
In the end the only things I could tie to the suspicious actions of Vannatter and Lange were sloppy police work, “team spirit” and contrived photo ops. These guys saw more evidence on Bundy against O.J. than either of them had ever seen against anyone in their careers. They stopped looking for suspects BEFORE they left for Rockingham and started looking for ways to tie the evidence together in a way that would make them look good. Carrying the blood and the shoes were great ways to get on television without looking like you’re trying to. They were bad ways to plant evidence with everybody on earth looking at them and the international press taking pictures.
I’m sure these guys got together to tell compatible stories when they could and to protect their own. That sort of behavior appeared to be normal LAPD practice and that was as far as I could get with it. –Jasper
