You pointed out something here I hadn’t thought about before. I never even considered the watch she was wearing at the recital. However, the watch she was wearing when she was killed was a Swiss Army watch – a “man’s” watch with the big face.
Verifiably information on the condition of Nicole’s watch is hard to come by. However, that was the watch she usually wore and she had a busy day with schedules to keep that required having her watch set to the right time.
In American Tragedy, you get an idea of the problem with the time on Nicole’s watch:
Page 223 – “McNally remembers an occasion when they were looking at autopsy pictures. One close-up of Nicole showed her wristwatch at ten o’clock. Shapiro got excited and exclaimed, ‘Now we know the time of death!’ The lawyer sounded pleased.
“…But does Shapiro realize that the close-ups of the bodies weren’t taken until the next day? There’s nothing to indicate that the watch was stopped. The problem what that there was only one photo showing Nicole’s watch.”
To find out anything about the watch you have to go to several sources, consider the bias of the author and the quality of his or her source. Then you have to put everything you find together and see what matches up.
From the long shot of Nicole’s body with Fuhrman pointing to the glove you can clearly see that the back of her left hand (and therefore the back of her left wrist) is against the pavement. In every photo of Nicole taken between 1992 and 194 that show her watch, the face is on the back of her left wrist. The autopsy photo of her left hand covered with blood in Evidence Dismissed does not show the watch. All you see is a round white spot where it could have been and a gloved hand over a higher part of her wrist where it also might have been.
During the trial commentators mentioned that the crystal was broken and the watch was stopped But there are no photos of it anywhere I can find and the only written description of its condition is in Killing Time: Page 136 “Nicole’s watch is stopped violently at 10:03 pm. Its broken crystal suggests some strong impact.” The author does not give his source. –Jasper
