The detectives arrived on Rockingham at 5:05 (no conflict anybody’s records or testimony there). According to the testimony of Lange and Vannatter and the police logs, they range the Ashford gate bell, talked to a Westec security guard and Fuhrman made his flashlight discovery of the “blood” spot above the Bronco door handle between 5:10 and 5:30.
Fuhrman says that he noted “brush marks on the doorsill which appeared to be blood,” the “odd angle” at which the vehicle was parked and the piece of wood on the parkway. Fuhrman ran the plate number for the Bronco at 5:30 (Fuhrman says Vannatter asked him to run the plate at 5:13). It was registered to Hertz and the detectives, knowing that O.J. was a spokesperson for Hertz assumed he was the principle driver. Fuhrman investigated further and saw a package inside the vehicle that said, “Orenthal Enterprises: Attention Cathy. In Murder in Brentwood (page 27) Fuhrman writes that the package said, “O.J. Simpson Enterprises: Attention Cathy.”
Around 5:45 (Evidence Dismissed, page 21) Fuhrman went over the wall and let the other detectives into the property. Phillips interviewed Kao briefly then went to Arnelle’s room with the RHD detectives. Fuhrman stayed behind, checked Kato’s shoes and asked him if anything unusual happened the night before. Kato told Fuhrman about the bang and Fuhrman went to investigate at 6:05 (Fuhrman says 5:20). At 6:15 or 6:20 (according to Vannatter and Lange), he caught up with Vannatter talking to Kato in O.J.’s bar area/pool table/TV room and said (Evidence Dismissed, page 29), “You gotta see what I just found.” He took Vannatter out to the south path and showed him the glove. Shortly before then he showed the glove to Phillips. His partner Brad Roberts showed up on Rockingham just after Fuhrman showed the other detectives the glove.
The south path behind the second gate (see Animations: Kato’s walk) is heavily shaded with closely packed trees on one side and Kato’s guesthouse on the other. Furthermore, a large carport on the Salinger’s side of the fence that begins just in front (west) of where the glove was photographed provides a considerable amount of shade even at sunrise. I think that Fuhrman would have needed a good flashlight to see anything clearly. Like you, I believe he had one. I believe he used it on Rockingham and Bundy. –Jasper
