I believe that something like this happened to Allan Park and Kato Kaelin. Only they never figured out where their “memories” came from. The pressures of popular opinion skewed their recall ability to be more in line with “everybody” understood, desired or believed. Kato was particularly vulnerable in the civil trial because Petrocelli moved up the timeline but the only way he could make it work was to imply that Kato cleaned up after O.J. That was also in his book. I bet it was in his “coaching” sessions, too.
Marcia didn’t understand the implications of the golf bag. Baker and Petrocelli did. So did Kato AFTER the criminal trial but all of them were trying to work it into a presumption that Kato lied – except Kato, of course. There was no way for Kato not to have seen O.J. if Baker and Petrocelli believed Park. They did.
Unlike the parked cars, the golf bag meant something in real time to everyone involved. It meant that O.J. was getting ready to load up the limo. When Kato saw the limo, he had to be looking for any sign of O.J. That’s why he would have noticed the golf bag the first time he passed the bench if it were there. That’s why he DID notice it the second time. Kato was goofy but he wasn’t stupid. O.J. was no longer in danger of going to prison forever for murder but Kato was in danger of going to prison for conspiracy after the fact. Baker wanted the bag to be there when Kato passed the bench the first time because it lined up with Park’s testimony. Petrocelli didn’t want it to be there because it didn’t line up with his theory that Kato lied about not seeing O.J. Kato tried to have it both ways.
Nobody attempted to see what would happen if Park were simply off in his estimate of time by fifteen or twenty seconds. -- Jasper
