The knife in the kitchen was not used to carry out the murders. The long thin stab wounds on the bodies rule that out. The butcher knife had a thick blade. Charlie suggested that Nicole might have used it to cut flowers.
Someone else (I think it was Jean or Miss Marple) suggested that Fuhrman planted the butcher knife to bias the other detectives’ thinking about a knife being the actual murder weapon. Until the bodies were cleaned up it would not have been possible for anyone to tell what the murder weapon was. Until the bodies were autopsied it would have been impossible to tell what kind of knife or knives produced the wounds.
When I saw the photo of the butcher knife on the counter I was struck by three things at once:
1. The tip of the blade pointed outward the way it would if the person who put it there held it with the blade pointing down – the way women in the movies hold it when they are defending themselves against a man they fear will harm them. If the blade were pointing up the hand the handle would point out on the counter.
2. Nicole would never put down a knife that way and leave it there with young children in the house.
3. The knife did not seem to appear until Fuhrman did. Officer Riske described what he saw in the kitchen when he entered it alone. He noted a blue jean jacket on the back of a chair but not the knife. The jacket disappeared when Fuhrman left. He never mentioned it and no one else saw it.
In Murder in Brentwood Fuhrman uses the knife to tell his story of Nicole getting it to defend herself against O.J. if he got into the house. His story is consistent with the placement of the knife. It is also consent with the pressed down bushes on the porch, which suggests that someone fell into the bushes (Marcia interpreted that evidence as meaning the killer “lay in wait” in the bushes. O.J. wore a blue jean jacket to his daughter’s dance recital. If he hadn’t also worn it to the airport and it somehow disappeared, the blue jean jacket would have looked like his and you could then create a believable story of a fight between O.J. and Ron that started in the kitchen and ended up outside. The fact that O.J. wore the blue jean jacket to the airport meant that the story had to be modified extemporaneously – and someone working with the killer was watching O.J. –Jasper
