I’m posting this response to John’s challenge to you because I can’t think of what to say to him that I haven’t already said. If I am not making myself clear please let me know…
I told John that I couldn’t answer his challenge because I didn’t accept his premise (I don’t try to prove theories; I try to disprove them). Your response to the challenge shows the inherent problem in trying to come up with evidence that would change your mind AFTER you have seen tons of evidence and ruled a suspect in or out.
I had a lot of theories BEFORE I wrote Iago. More than half of the book is composed of e-mails where you can track the evolution of my theory that Fuhrman was the killer. You can see where I was missing vital piece of information. You can see where I got things wrong and what happened when I found my mistakes – the case against Fuhrman, Roberts, Shipp, Faye and Denise got stronger. You can see on the site where I invite criticism, continue to look for mistakes and correct them as I go along.
The point is, I have ALWAYS looked for evidence that would change my mind.
With O.J., I looked for a drug in his system or some precipitating event that would cause him to fly into a murderous rage. I looked for a cut on the Bundy glove that corresponded to the cut on his finger and evidence that the cut was as big when he left for Chicago as it was when he returned. I didn’t find any of these things, so I changed my mind about O.J.
I did the same thing with Kato. How tall was he? What size shoe did he wear? Did he fake hearing the three unnatural thumps to fool Rachel (why, if he could have pounded ONCE on the wall with the receiver right next to it)? Was there anything in his history to suggest that he could commit two grizzly murders to further his acting career? Could one person have committed the murders without being seen going or coming in the Bronco?
John may not accept this, but you can nail down that last item if you have enough facts and technical knowledge. Dick Wagner could have done it if he hadn’t been convinced that O.J. drove the Bronco from Bundy and he had gotten the proportions of the Bronco and the driveway right. If O.J. told the truth about the last time he drove the Bronco, it would have been the last time that anyone drove it. When I learned that the Bronco hadn’t moved (no guess -- no other explanation), I changed my mind about Kato.
Toward the end of the prosecution case I took another look at Fuhrman. Did he have a history of violence AND planting evidence? Was he obsessed with O.J. and Nicole? Did he have contacts close to them? Did he really have an alibi? Did he seek the spotlight? Could he have arranged to be the first detective on the scene? How tall was he? What was his shoe size? Where did his toes point when his feet met the ground? Did he drive a SUV that fit Heidstra’s description of the vehical he saw gong south on Bundy? Where the hell was Torrance and Redondo Beach?
I know the answers now. I didn’t know them then. – Jasper
