Miss Marple,
I wonder why John didn’t mention that strange paragraph? Could you have read it wrong or remembered it incorrectly? This is a bombshell.
In trying to retrace the steps of the four detectives from the blood spot on the Bronco to Kato’s door I ran into a problem with how it was that Phillips decided to knock on Kato’s door. I posted this before but now it seems appropriate to go over it again….
On the witness stand, Fuhrman said that Phillips banged on the door because he noticed someone inside. Phillips didn’t say why he did it; he just made it seem like a logical thing to do. Vannatter said that he saw Phillips do it but he didn’t say why. Lange recalled that FUHRMAN said he “saw” someone inside and called everyone’s attention to him.
To resolve these discrepancies I looked for areas in which there was no disagreement between the detectives. I found two of them: 1) the single file order in which the detectives walked; Phillips in the lead followed by Lange, Fuhrman and Vannatter. 2) Phillips pounded on the door.
Vannatter’s testimony suggests that he was preoccupied with the door to the main house behind him when he heard the pounding and saw Phillips doing it. If Lange was correct about Fuhrman calling attention to someone inside, Phillips and Lange had to turn around and Phillips had to walk past Lange to go BACK to the door. This suggests that Westec told them where Arnelle’s bungalow and the maid’s bungalow were before they entered the estate and they were on their way to the second or third bungalow when Phillips and Lange turned around. In other words, as far as they knew at the time, they had no reason to stop at the first bungalow because they didn’t think anyone lived there.
In Evidence Dismissed, Vannatter sides with Lange (page 21, last full paragraph), “At the first door, Fuhrman looks in a window and tells the others, ‘It looks like there’s somebody inside.’ Phillips then pounds hard on the door.”
This should have been a minor point because all of the detectives agreed that Fuhrman’s find of the glove was legitimate and it doesn’t do them any good to break ranks on the issue of who led whom to the man who led Fuhrman to the glove. But in Murder in Brentwood, Fuhrman insists that Phillips spotted Kato on the bed and alerted the others. Lange and Vannatter give Fuhrman a helping hand in Evidence Dismissed by saying that PHILLIPS asked Kato if anything unusual happened to him the night before. On the other hand, Moldea could have taken liberties with what Lange and Vannatter told him to tell the story of Fuhrman giving Kato the intoxication test. In any event, he doesn’t give Kato’s reply because nobody follows up on it. According to Phillips and Fuhrman, Phillips, Lange and Vannatter weren’t even in the room when FUHRMAN asked Kato if anything unusual happed the night before.
John has the book you’re waiting for, Miss Marple. Maybe he will tell us what Kato said about which detectives asked him what questions. –Jasper
