Rachel Ferrara had her TV on when she was talking to Kato before he hung up to check out the thumps. She told Kato that she didn’t feel an earthquake and she explained that if there had been one she thought that it would have been announced on TV. A TV set can be a timepiece if you are watching a show that starts or stops on the hour, quarter hour or half hour. On some sets in 1994 you could press a button on your remote control to get the exact time if you were not anchored to a phone line out of reach of your remote or if you were too lazy to get it. If she had a VCR she had a timepiece. If she had a wristwatch that she wasn’t wearing when she asked Kato the time, she had a timepiece. If she had an alarm clock, a counter clock, a mantle clock or a wall clock she had a timepiece. When Kato hung up all she had to do was look at any timepiece in her house.
Knowing what time it was became important to Rachel when Kato hung up. When time is important to you what do you do? You look at clock. Waiting for Kato to call again was important to her until he called. She may not have checked the time at the instant he called back (thus, the estimate) but to know that it was more than10 minutes later (when she started to wonder if she should be concerned) she had to have checked the time.
Rachel estimated that the “bang” occurred at 10:40 based on when Kato told her that it was 10:30. She estimated that they talked for another 10 minutes after that. She did not say that Kato left his bungalow at 10:50. She just said that this was when he hung up. That’s all she could testify to. If the actual time was 10:51 or 10:52, 10:50 is still a good estimate. When you’re estimating time you round it to the nearest hour, half hour, quarter hour, the nearest ten minutes or the nearest five minutes. The only time you get into minutes or seconds is when the time involved is less than five minutes.
Kato did not necessarily leave the instant he hung up. It took only a half a minute for Kato to reach the spot where Park saw him. But how long did it take him to find his flashlight or to look for a better one before deciding that he didn’t have a better one? He could have taken a dump or fussed with his hair or both for three and a half to five and a half minutes. Nothing of the sort would have been big enough in is mind to recall an our later. It wasn’t until the criminal trial that these few minutes loomed large in anyone’s mind. The big issues were when he heard the thumps an when Park first saw him.
The rest of your time estimates are based on the kind of calculations Bill Pavelic did to determine that Rosa Lopez left the Salinger’s house at 10:00 and saw the Bronco 10:15. She did a lot of things but she did all of them in less than three minutes. –Jasper
