Fuhrman’s omission of the order in which the detectives filed by Kato’s door looks suspicious to me. According to Lange and Vannatter, Lange was walking between Phillips and Fuhrman when Fuhrman alerted EVERYONE in the single file of detectives to someone inside of the first Bungalow. Why, then, did Phillips go back to look inside? Why didn’t Lange or Vannatter do it? They were the lead detectives. Fuhrman was only supposed to have been there because he knew the way and Phillips was supposed to have been there only because he drove the car that Fuhrman rode in. They were officially off the case. Vannatter and Lange were closest to Fuhrman in line.

I agree with you that the detectives tried to coordinate their “memories” to avoid contradicting each other in court. What group of allies wouldn’t? However, Lange did contradict Fuhrman about what caused Phillips to pound on Kato’s door. He had no ulterior motive for doing so. At that point in the trial they were on the same side. Like the alarm to the back door of the main house, the thing that caused Phillips to pound on Kato’s door had to have been a minor point to Lange when he testified. It was also an event he was likely to recall because of his role in the investigation and his place in line.
It seems unlikely to me that Fuhrman made a general announcement about seeing someone in Kato’s bungalow when he was separated in line from Phillips. I’m not convinced that anyone could have seen Kato in bed from outside. This looks too much like the blood-inside-the-Bronco trick that Fuhrman pulled on Officer Thompson – the power of suggestion in action – a case of Phillips “seeing” in his mind what Fuhrman primed him to see through the blinds. Fuhrman couldn’t be confident that it would work with Lange or Vannatter. They might have looked, seen nothing and kept going. He had no special influence with them. Phillips did.
I think Fuhrman expected Phillips (in the lead) or Lange right behind him to knock on the first Bungalow door just to be thorough. When neither of them did, FUHRMAN walked past Lange to Phillips and both of them walked past Lange to get back to Kato’s door to avoid an all-Fuhrman show. I think that Phillips pounded on the door because now he was standing next to Fuhrman when Fuhrman announced that he saw someone inside.
Again, Vannatter and Lange, didn’t say on the witness stand WHY Phillips banged on the door. They just testified that he did. –Jasper
